Ecotourism Business
Ecotourism is one of the important components of Iwokrama's strategy for financial self sufficiency. It is generally defined as touring a natural area while conserving the environment and well-being of local people.
The Iwokrama Forest and the Rupununi Wetlands and savannahs offer visitors the opportunity for an exceptional natural and cultural experience set in a learning context. The Forest has a Field Station, a canopy walkway, several satellite camps and a nascent trail system. The Field Station is equipped with visitor cabins, dining facilities and transport vehicles.
Ecotourism is currently Iwokrama's most developed business. It caters to many types of tourists including nature enthusiasts, bird watchers, adventure tourists, backpackers and education groups. Current popular ecotourism activities are visits to the canopy walkway, caiman spotting and nature walks.
Other ideas currently being developed include a high end lodge and sport fishing. An operator agreement for the CIDA-funded Canopy Walkway is currently being developed. Iwokrama has decided that its role will be that of booking agent and is therefore currently seeking partners and tour operators to jointly develop its ecotourism products.
