Location and How to Get There
The Iwokrama Forest is located in the heart of one of four last untouched tropical forests of the world The Guiana Shield of North-Eastern South America, scroll down to find out how you can get to Iwokrama and begin your adventure.

Passport & Visa Information
All visitors to Guyana must hold a valid passport. Visas are required with the exception of nationals of the following countries: Commonwealth nations, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Norway Finland, Sweden, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, USA, and Korea.
To Guyana (Cheddi Jagan International)
- Caribbean Airways flies daily between Guyana from Barbados and offers direct and connecting service between Barbados and Canada, the U.K., the U.S. and other countries.
- Universal Airlines and North American Airlines offer direct flights from New York (JFK) to Georgetown.
- The three airlines above, along with Caribbean Star and Liat, also have connecting service to Guyana from many places in the Caribbean.
- There is an airport Departure Tax of GD$4,000 for all passengers that can be purchased from local travel agencies or paid direct at the airport.
- (Land or boat travel to Guyana from other countries is difficult to impossible, unless you come by your own yacht, and there are anchorages along the Essequibo. Please contact the Guyana Tourism Authority for further information on locations and facilities.
To Iwokrama Forest
By Air
The Air Company Trans Guyana Airways (TGA) has a scheduled service to Annai and Lethem on Monday, Wednesdays, Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays, you must request at the time of booking to be dropped off and or picked up at the Iwokrama Airstrip in Fairview. You will need to report to Ogle Airstrip 45mins before the flight departs. It takes 1 hour to fly to Iwokrama where you will land at Fairview Village and be met by a representative from Iwokrama and transported to the Field Station. Approx US$100 one way this is a fast and wonderful way to see the forest canopy and landscapes, please note that baggage restrictions apply. You also have the option to charter your own plane to the Iwokrama Forest, please contact your tour operator for more details.
By Road
Hired Vehicle - Hired vehicles are available from Georgetown to take you to the Iwokrama Forest. Please contact us or your tour operator. The Drive to the Iwokrama forest takes between 6 and 7 hours, all vehicles are 4 wheel drive with experienced driver guides.
By Bus
The Intraserve Bus Company operates a scheduled bus service to Lethem via Iwokrama on a Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Tickets can be purchased on arrival to Guyana in their Georgetown office or please contact your tour operator. Costs US$35 one way but be advised that mechanical reliability and travel times will vary. |
