Getting to Guyana and Iwokrama Forest

 

Passport & Visa Information

All visitors to Guyana must hold a valid passport. Visas are required with the exception of nationals of the following countries: Commonwealth nations, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Norway Finland, Sweden, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, USA, and Korea (updated March 2004).

 

 

To Guyana (Cheddi Jagan International)

  • BWIA flies daily between Guyana from Barbados and offers direct and connecting service between Barbados and Canada, the U.K., the U.S. and other countries.
  • Universal Airlines and North American Airlines offer direct flights from New York (JFK) to Georgetown.
  • The three airlines above, along with Caribbean Star and Liat, also have connecting service to Guyana from many places in the Caribbean.
  • There is an airport Departure Tax of GD$4,000 for all passengers that can be purchased from local travel agencies or at the airport.
  • (Land or boat travel to Guyana from other countries is difficult to impossible.)

 

 

To Iwokrama Forest

  • Iwokrama can provide you with transportation in a confortable 4WD vehicle with A/C. Contact us for details.
  • Drive for 5-7 hours to Kurupukari Crossing, then take a short boat ride across the Essequibo River to the Field Station.
  • Fly to Annai and then make a shorter land transfer.
  • Combination trips are possible (i.e. drive into the forest from Georgetown, then fly out from Annai.)
  • Privately owned and operated buses are a very economical alternative (US$20 in March 2004), but be advised that merchanical reliability and travel times will vay among buses.
