Visitor Guidelines*

 

Iwokrama will only continue to be an extraordinary and pristine forest place with your help and cooperation...

 

Please adhere to the following guidelines for your safety, the safety of the people and wildlife here and to help preserve this world treasure. If you need assistance or have questions, please ask your Iwokrama Guide who will be accompanying you at all times while you are in the Forest.

 

  • Do not litter and please pick up litter of those less considerate than you.

 

  • An Iwokrama Ranger must or other designated guide must accompany you.

 

  • Remain on designated visitor trails. Though generally harmless, wildlife may be dangerous if disturbed. There is also a danger of tree falls.

 

  • Rocks, trees, or mud walls must not be defaced or otherwise disturbed.

 

  • No plants, animals, or their remains (e.g. shells, bones, wood) or other natural products should be disturbed.

 

  • Animals must not be touched, chased or otherwise startled.

 

  • No fires are permitted anywhere, anytime unless approved by management.

 

  • Smoking is allowed only in designated areas and butts must be carefully extinguished and discarded in a proper receptacle.

 

  • Hunting or trapping is only permitted for subsistence use by local inhabitants.

 

  • Leave steams and rivers clean; do not spill fuel, oil, detergent or soap within 100 metres of waterways.

 

  • Use available latrines; if none are available please bury waste at least 6 inches deep and at least 100 metres from any trail, campsite, or waterway.

 

  • All biodegradable refuse must be buried, non-biodegrabable refuse must be taken with you.

 

  • Camps must be situated at least 30 metres away from waterways. Camp sites must also consider the potential risk from tree falls.

 

  • Do not harvest or remove any forest products.

 

  • The purchase of products not produced under a sustainable management plan is strongly discouraged.

 

  • Controlled fishing is permitted under certain circumstances. Please ask your Iwokrama Ranger or Guide about this.

 

  • Firearms are only permitted for use in scientific research, and under strict supervision. Prior approval must be obtained before arrival. Firearms must be secured and kept out of sight, and are not necessary for protection from wildlife.
