University of Guyana
Feature: 2002
The University of Guyana is an important partner in Iwokrama's mission. Iwokrama professional staff are encouraged to contribute to the university by providing seminars and formal courses. For example, in 2002, Janette Forte, Senior Social Scientist, taught a course on Indigenous Peoples. Previously, other staff have conducted courses in Tourism. In 2002, 10 biology and forestry undergraduates will receive Iwokrama bursaries tenable for our training courses. In 2001, ten Natural Sciences undergraduates were supported in a seven-week training course in amphibian surveying and monitoring techniques as a part of Iwokrama's work on amphibians - funded by the Declining Amphibians Populations Task Force.
Iwokrama on Campus Iwokrama's Bioinventory and Bioprospecting Unit was housed at the university on its Turkeyen campus and serves as an additional laboratory facility for students of the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The lab has been equipped to conduct microbiological and phytochemical research.
Collaboration via Iwokrama Iwokrama strives to facilitate research contacts between visiting researchers and university staff and students by asking researchers to present seminars on campus and encouraging the inclusion of local staff and students as collaborators/ research assistants in projects, to the benefit of all particpants. Such opportunities are advertised on our vacancies page when they arise.
