Harpy Eagle Killed on Linden-Lethem Road

On November 18th, 2006 at 14:00 hours, a Harpy Eagle was discovered along the Iwokrama stretch of the Linden-Lethem Road. The Eagle was killed by a vehicle that had intentionally swerved off the road to hit it, as it was perhaps feeding on a kill.

The wanton and unnecessary killing of wildlife along the road is a growing trend noticed by the Iwokrama Rangers. Some of the road users who indulge in such practices are not only showing complete disregard to wildlife, but seriously affect Guyana’s ability to build its economy through development of the tourism sector, and demonstration of its capacity to manage its natural resources.

Harpy Eagle (Largest Bird of Prey in the World)

The limited regulation of activities along the road underlies the importance of engaging all stakeholders in the co-management of this vital and important artery of Guyana that links the Coast with its South American neighbours.

The Harpy Eagle, which is the largest forest eagle in the world, is a CITES I species and is endangered.  Wildlife are an attraction for tourists and the reckless destruction will not only affect our tourism industry negatively but also our forest integrity which animals play a key role in maintaining.

We appeal to all road users to help protect our heritage and respect the animals of the rain forest and savannahs.
