Iwokrama International Centre for Rain forest Conservation and Development – iwokrama.org

[Effective date 7/17/2026]
Thank you for visiting the Iwokrama International Centre for Rain Forest Conservation and Development website. (“Iwokrama,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting your personal information. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, share, and protect information when you visit or interact with iwokrama.org and its associated forms and services (jointly, the “Site”). By accessing and continuing to use the Site, you acknowledge that you have read and agree to the practices described in this Policy.

This Policy covers iwokrama.org only. Our tourism booking site, iwokramariverlodge.com, and the social media platforms we use (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and YouTube) are operated under their own terms and may have separate privacy practices — see Section 5, Links to Other Websites. If you are applying for a position through our Jobs page, the information you submit as part of your application is also handled under this Policy unless we tell you otherwise at the point of collection.

1. Information We Collect

Personal Information we may collect includes your name, phone number, email address, mailing address, and organizational affiliation, as well as payment or bank details you provide to make a donation. We collect this when you:

  • Submit our Contact Us form (name, phone number, email, topic — General, Tourism, Partnership, or Donations — and message);
  • Submit our Donations form (name, phone number, email, topic — receipt request, donation issue, or investments — and message), or make a donation online, by mailed cheque, or by bank transfer;
  • Apply for a role through our Jobs page;
  • Contact us directly by phone, email, or letter; or
  • Engage with Iwokrama on social media, where we may see the public profile information and content you choose to share with us.

Device and Usage Information: like most websites, we automatically collect some technical information when you browse the Site, such as your IP address, browser type, device type, and the pages you view. This helps us understand how the Site is used.

Cookies and Similar Technologies: we use cookies and comparable technologies to operate the Site and understand visitor activity. Full details, including the types of cookies we use and how to control them, are set out in our separate Cookie Policy.

2. How We Use Your Information

We only collect and use Personal Information where we have a lawful basis to do so — generally either your consent, or our legitimate interest in operating and promoting Iwokrama’s conservation mission, maintaining our relationships with supporters and partners, and protecting the Site. Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time; where we rely on legitimate interest, you may object. Contact us as described in Section 3 with any questions about the basis for a specific use.

We use Personal Information to:

    • Respond to inquiries submitted through our Contact Us or Donations forms;
    • Process donations, issue receipts, and manage our relationship with donors and “Iwokrama Friends” partner entities;
    • Evaluate job applications submitted through our Jobs page;
    • Understand and improve how the Site is used; and
    • Comply with the Laws of Guyana.

Sharing. We do not sell or rent your Personal Information,

We may share information with:

  • Service providers who help us operate the Site or process donations on our instructions (for example, a payment processor for online donations, or the banks handling wire transfers to Iwokrama’s or Iwokrama Friends – USA Inc.’s accounts);
  • Government or law enforcement authorities, where we believe disclosure is reasonably necessary to comply with the law or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Iwokrama or others; and
  • A successor organization, in the event of a merger, reorganization, or similar transition involving Iwokrama.

Retention. We keep Personal Information only for as long as needed to fulfil the purposes described in this Policy or to meet our legal and regulatory obligations, after which we delete it or remove information that could identify you.

3. Your Choices

You can control the cookies collected through the Site — see our Cookie Policy for how to manage or reject them through your browser or our cookie banner.

4. How We Protect Your Information

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect the Personal Information we hold, and limit access to staff who need it to do their jobs. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Iwokrama does not receive or store your full card details — they are handled directly by that processor under its own security standards. If you donate by mailed cheque or bank transfer (including through Iwokrama Friends – USA Inc. or Republic Bank Guyana), your information is handled by Iwokrama and the relevant financial institution in line with their standard banking security practices.

5. Links to Other Websites

The Site links to other websites, including our tourism booking site, iwokramariverlodge.com, and our social media pages on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and YouTube. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of these external sites, and encourage you to review their own privacy policies.

6. Children’s Privacy

The Site is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect Personal Information from children under 13. If we learn that we have inadvertently collected such information, we will delete it. A parent or guardian may contact us on a child’s behalf using the details in Section 9.

7. International Visitors and Cross-Border Transfers

Iwokrama is based in Guyana, and information you provide may be processed or stored in Guyana and in other countries where our service providers or banking partners operate, including the United States (for example, through Iwokrama Friends – USA Inc.). By using the Site or making a donation through these channels, you agree to this transfer of information.

If you are located in the European Union, United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction with its own data protection laws, you may have rights to access, correct, or request deletion of your Personal Information, and to object to certain processing. Please contact us as described in Section 9 to exercise these rights.
