ACTO PROJECT

Improve Infrastructure and Capacity

The ACTO-supported project “Stakeholder Engagement on Management Plans for Select Wildlife Species” was commissioned under the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organisation (ACTO) Regional Project for the Management, Monitoring, and Control of Species of Wild Fauna and Flora Threatened by Trade.

This initiative focuses on developing, validating, and improving species management plans through broad stakeholder engagement — strengthening wildlife conservation efforts in Guyana and the wider Amazon region.

Wildlife Research and Management Plans

Iwokrama’s Research Team conducted national population assessments for several key faunal species:

  • Spectacled Caiman (Caiman crocodilus)

  • Cuvier’s Dwarf Caiman (Paleosuchus palpebrosus)

  • Smooth-fronted Caiman (Paleosuchus trigonatus)

  • Yellow and Red-footed Tortoises (Chelonoidis spp.)

  • Lowland Tapir (Tapirus terrestris)

Based on these studies, draft management plans were prepared to guide conservation actions and sustainable use. The Guyana Wildlife Conservation and Management Commission (GWCMC) served as the national oversight agency for this process.

Stakeholder Consultations and Validation

To ensure that the management plans reflect real-world needs and expert insights, Iwokrama organized consultations with key stakeholders, including:

  • Wildlife trappers and traders
  • Regulatory agencies
  • Academic and research institutions
  • Forest concessionaires
  • Environmental NGOs
  • Local communities and the general public via an online portal

The process concluded with broad validation and feedback from both national and international experts, ensuring that the plans are practical, inclusive, and scientifically sound.
