Guyana Conservation
Initiative
The Guyana Conservation Initiative, funded by the ExxonMobil Foundation, is a multi-year project supporting coastal and hinterland conservation across Guyana.
The initiative strengthens biodiversity protection, promotes ecosystem restoration, and enhances local community capacity through education, livelihood support, and research. With technical assistance from Environmental Management Consultants Inc. (EMC), the project integrates conservation action with community development.
Ecosystem Restoration and Monitoring
A key focus of the initiative is ecosystem and mangrove restoration, combined with robust monitoring systems for forests, wildlife, and social impacts.
Activities include:
- Biodiversity monitoring (forests, rivers, and social indicators)
- Support for wildlife clubs in forest-dependent communities
- Promotion of sustainable livelihoods tied to conservation goals
- Forest research including natural resource management and carbon monitoring
These actions help maintain the ecological integrity of key habitats while providing local benefits through conservation-linked enterprises.
Education, Capacity Building, and Community Support
The project places strong emphasis on education, awareness, and training, empowering communities to engage in sustainable resource use and conservation leadership.
Key activities include:
- Natural resources management course for local participants
- Training on forest values and sustainable livelihoods
- PhD scholarship support for biodiversity research
- Community-based projects led by youth and women’s groups
These efforts foster knowledge sharing, strengthen local governance, and ensure that conservation work is inclusive and community-driven.
